Discuss It > Lawn kill

With all of your crew - surely you must get those lovely yellow dog spots on the grass from the morning pee. It you have don't - what are you doing to prevent it. My lawn is a mess.

We aren't doing anything special. We do water regularly and we always pick up anything more concrete on sight. But other than that, I hear you and while we do have the odd patch, mostly the grass is still green.

The first year we had little holes all over our yard (Katie is a digger), just little holes like someone wanted to play marbles all over the lawn. This winter we did not get as much snow in the back yard. In Winnipeg, we usually have mountains for Katie to climb. Lack of snow = brown spots. We just add some grass seed and rake it into the patches. Usually takes a week or two to sprout if the birds leave it alone. Longer grass also shades the spots and makes them almost disappear unless you have a husband who mows as soon as the grass is over 2 inches. Just buy some grass seed at the garden center and scatter by hand over the holes, then keep watered.

Good Luck

I see some pet supplies stores are selling a product that can prevent the dog's urine yellowing the lawn. I did not check into it, but guess it may be something to be taken internally to alter the ph level of the urine. check it out! but not sure if it is good for the dog itself. My neighbor said keep watering her lawn helps.

If the lawn is quite wet when your dog pees on it, it won't be a problem. It's the dry grass that causes the issue so it is not so much of a problem for us in Vancouver except in the dry summer months.

We find that speading a bit of lime over the yellow stained grass helps to neurtralize the acidic effect of the dog urine. When buying a bag of lime, I usually pour it into a covered plastic container that I keep outside and, with a plastic scoop, sprinkle some over the yellow stained grass. I keep my havanese "Toby" away from the limed covered areas until new grass has grown.
Hope you find this helpful
